Dame Deborah James sadly lost her five year fight with bowel cancer at the age of 40 on Tuesday, with the heartbreaking news shared on her Bowelbabe Instagram page. The BBC star, who shot to fame for her You, Me and The Big C podcast, first announced she was receiving end of life care back in May and had moved back in with her parents as she stopped undergoing treatment for her cancer.
It was during this time that Deborah decided to set up a fundraiser called the Bowelbabe Fund, with the intention of raising money for Cancer Research UK to help others beat the cruel disease that was killing her. In a defiant message when first launching her campaign, Deborah wrote: "So, I suppose this is the message I never wanted to get to! "We have tried everything, but my body simply isn't playing ball. Even with all the innovative cancer drugs in the world or some magic new breakthrough, I realise that my rollercoaster of a ride is coming to an end very soon.
"Your support in establishing the Bowelbabe Fund, continuing to spread the word, and smashing those poo taboos will forever be cherished!” Donations have continued to pour in since the fund was launched, but in the wake of Deborah’s death the fund has seen donations skyrocket, with tens of thousands of pounds pledged in the hours following the announcement. Initially only hoping to raise £250,000, the Bowelbabe fund now stands at over £6,862,787.
Deborah's death was announced on social media, where she had been documenting her cancer journey since day one. A post shared by her family on her BowelBabe Instagram read: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Dame Deborah James, the most amazing wife,
