Chris Evans‘ new film Ghosted as “the worst of the year”.Directed by Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody), the romantic action-adventure sees Evans play Cole Turner, a farmer who falls for de Armas’ enigmatic Sadie Rhodes, only to discover that she’s a secret agent.“Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world,” reads a synopsis for the film.Released on Apple TV+ on April 21, Ghosted has been universally panned by critics and currently holds a “Rotten” score of 33% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Many have noted a lack of chemistry between the two leads, while others have taken aim at the film’s plot, script and CGI.In a one-star review, The Guardian wrote: “It’s utterly impossible to see the appeal of Ghosted, the movie, a staggeringly, maddeningly atrocious heap of increasingly boneheaded decisions that will act as depressing documentation of just how rotten things got in the current oversaturated streaming landscape.”Empire was similarly critical, writing: “If you’re going to take a hugely familiar premise and rely on easy star chemistry to sell it, you really need the right stars in the right roles and a killer script for all the killing.
Sadly this ain’t quite it.”“The espionage intrigue is rote; the action is more bombastic than any rom-act-com can truly sustain,” wrote Variety. “I’m not sure if Dexter Fletcher has it in him to stage an elegantly fanciful-yet-plausible action scene.
Yet in Ghosted he tosses a whole lot of stuff into the blender, and that’s supposed to be enough. The action in this movie doesn’t really do much to bring the two characters together, except to the extent that when it’s over it’s like

Following their grand Marvel success, filmmaking pair the Russo Brothers have irked many moviegoing audiences, filmmakers, journalists, and very-online social media audiences. Like James Cameron before them and his brand of smug irritation, their success has seemingly inflated an arrogance in them, and or, their epic box office accomplishments have made the media hang on to their every word and prop it up as something worth quoting (and we’re guilty of this too).
Since her brief (and stunning) cameo in “No Time To Die,” Ana de Armas has been candid about what she thinks about the “James Bond” franchise. Ghosted is an over-caffeinated action comedy romance that tries too hard to be too many things, starting out as a sweet budding rom-com before drastically morphing into a violent international spy-chase movie anchored by a constantly bickering couple. This is one of those Hollywood movies that rarely slows down to breathe, throwing everything at the wall and just hoping some of it sticks.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic The romantic action comedy has always had a breathlessly eager-to-please, overstuffed quality. You might say it’s a what’s-not-to-like genre. We laugh! With pulses racing! And swoon at the moonstruck chemistry! In a superior rom-act-com, like “Romancing the Stone” or “Out of Sight” or “True Lies” or the new “Murder Mystery” sequel, the action is the romance — it’s how the characters connect. (One way the form extends vintage Hollywood screwball is that it tends to be about couples who so dislike each other that only by joining in death-defying scrapes can they melt the ice.) But then there are movies like “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” where the love gets sandwiched between vehicular mayhem so aggressive it’s played for “laughs,” and the too-muchness of the whole thing becomes like one of those fast-food fusion experiments. Sorry, but the movie escapism equivalent of a burger topped with a quesadilla served with cheese fries is not my idea of a good time.
