Creative Arts Emmys: ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Squid Game’ Among Big Winners on Night 2

Last Sunday (September 18), members of Atlanta’s LGBTQ community gathered for the 25th anniversary of Lambda Legal’s Southern Regional Office. The fundraising event, which was held at the Intercontinental Buckhead, highlighted both the past and present work the LGBTQ legal advocacy group has been involved with.

Michaela Zee editor Sandra Oh is set to narrate the upcoming PBS documentary “Rising Against Asian Hate: One Day in March,” slated to premiere Oct. 17. “Rising Against Asian Hate” explores the fight against anti-Asian hate following the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings that killed eight people, six of whom were women of Asian descent. The documentary features interviews with former Georgia State Rep. Stacey Abrams, Rep. Grace Meng, Georgia State Sen. Michelle Au, Georgia State Rep. Bee Nguyen, Georgia State Rep. Samuel Park and Byung J. “BJay” Park, former Senate-confirmed U.S. Attorney and legislator, among others. “With this documentary, we hope to examine this troubling escalation of racism against the AAPI community, pay respect to the lives lost and impacted by the violence, and champion those coming together to fight against the hate,” executive producer Gina Kim said in a statement.

He helped create “Saturday Night Live”; he hired Brandon Tartikoff, genius programmer and innovator, to revive NBC’s primetime fortunes. As president of NBC Sports, he oversaw the network’s Olympic strategy for many years. “Sunday Night Football” was his idea. Ebersol recounts the high (and sometimes low) points of his career in television in a new autobiography, “From Saturday Night to Sunday Night: My Forty Years of Laughter, Tears and Touchdowns in TV,” published this week by Simon & Schuster. While all of the great moments in his career were at NBC, Ebersol, now 75, started as a researcher at ABC Sports in 1967. Legendary ABC Sports chief Roone Arledge, Ebersol tells Variety, “was the most important figure in my life,” and the executive who eventually took on Ebersol as a trusted associate.

The 74th annual Emmy Awards did not disappoint on Monday night, celebrating what felt like a year of particularly refreshing, innovative and polarizing television. Some network linchpins such as HBO’s “Euphoria” and “Succession” both hit fever pitches in their most recent seasons, earning each of them 25 and 16 nominations, respectively. Others broke through the stereotypical Emmys mold with upset wins, such as ABC’s freshman sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” one of the few network shows to be celebrated at an awards show increasingly dominated by streamers. Other winners included HBO’s “White Lotus,” which took home the most awards of the night, Netflix’s “Squid Game,” the first non-English language series to compete in the drama category, and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” which took home the win for best comedy. The winners of this year's Emmy Awards, the most prestigious honours in television, have been announced. Succession, Ted Lasso, The White Lotus and Squid Game are among the shows that walked away with top awards.

The best of the 2021-2022 TV season has been revealed, first during the 74th Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which were handed on Sept. 3 and 4, before being followed by the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by Kenan Thompson on Sept. 12.

Jason Sudeikis tonight claimed his third Emmy, with the award recognizing his lead performance on Apple TV+’s hit series, Ted Lasso. (Watch his acceptance speech above.)

A first-time host. Kenan Thompson will make his debut as the 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards host on Monday, September 12.

Then there's Days of our Lives, which moves to Peacock on Monday, September 12 after nearly sixty years on NBC. In the place of will be NBC's new midday news show, NBC News Daily, which couldn't come at a more monumental time. Given that there will be ongoing coverage of the life and memorial of (who passed away last Thursday, September 8), NBC will lean into its royal correspondents all over the United Kingdom. Speaking of NBC—and Peacock for that matter—they are also broadcasting this year's Emmys, which move to Monday night as to not interfere with Sunday Night Football.

Carson Burton The Television Academy and NBC on Wednesday announced the first group of presenters for Monday night’s Emmys ceremony. The lineup includes Selena Gomez, “Hacks” stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, “Squid Game” stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, Amy Poehler, Diego Luna and more. The ceremony, which aims to celebrate television’s biggest names and shows, will be hosted by “SNL” star Kenan Thompson. The newly announced lineup of presenters for the evening includes four stars nominated for their acting performances: Smart and Einbinder for “Hacks” as well as Lee and Jung for “Squid Game.” Gomez, who notably did not get a nomination for her performance in “Only Murders in the Building,” will still see a chance at holding an Emmy statuette thanks to the show’s 17 awards nods, including for outstanding comedy series.

The winners in the Emmy Lead Actor In A Comedy Series category for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021 are once again in the race. The only catch is it could be one of three people: Donald Glover who took it in 2017, Bill Hader who nabbed it in 2018 and 2019, or Jason Sudeikis who won last year. Voters have given us all sorts of reasons to make a prediction for one of this trio. The other three in this year’s race are first-time nominees in the category, but two of them are true veteran showbiz icons. This group of heavy hitters presents us with a category that is not at all easy to prognosticate, one that could go any which way.

After a night when Adele, Barack Obama and Chadwick Boseman were all honored with shiny gold statues, the second night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards shared some tea leaves for next week’s Prime Time Emmy Awards ceremony. Three series took home five Emmys: “Euphoria,” “The White Lotus” and “Stranger Things.” “Squid Game” followed with four.

EJ Panaligan editor The second day of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys is underway at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles after a busy first night that saw winners announced for key categories such as outstanding animated program, documentary or nonfiction series, music direction and more. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” kicked things off with the win for casting in a comedy series. Tonight, winners will be announced in categories such as guest acting in comedy and drama series, original music and lyrics and outstanding television movie. Both nights of the Creative Arts Emmys precede the upcoming primetime ceremony, hosted by comedian Kenan Thompson, which is slated for Monday, Sept. 12.

George Chidi “What do you say to the unfortunate people on the internet who think Star Trek is too progressive?” Scott Beckett asked the panel of “Star Trek” series cast members in earnest on Saturday during a panel at the Dragon Con sci-fi and fantasy convention in Atlanta. The 39-year-old software engineer from Atlanta grew up watching “Star Trek” and it strongly shaped his beliefs, he said later. “It kind of built my values as a kid in a way because I didn’t have any other values, really.” The politics of “Star Trek” are familiar territory for cast members like Blu del Barrio, Wilson Cruz, Michelle Hurd and Anthony Rapp, who have played roles on “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard.” The four performers spoke in front of a thousand screaming fans in downtown Atlanta.
