A couple were hit with a £7,000 vet bill after their much-loved dog became sick following a walk on the beach.
Helen Bentley worried she was going to lose her 11-month-old cockapoo when he became seriously unwell after a visit to Filey beach on December 22.
The pooch is one of hundreds of pets to have reportedly fallen ill following walks along the Teesside, East Cleveland and Yorkshire coasts, according to Teesside Live.
Helen's husband had taken their pet out for some exercise, but later in the evening their pet became extremely unwell and rapidly deteriorated.
The poorly pup then required abdominal surgery as medication given by the vet was ineffective.
This failed and as he lost more weight and became weaker, he was transferred to a medical specialist in Stockton.
Helen, from York, said: "I am in no doubt that my dog became ill from this beach.
"Luckily he is making a slow recovery, we didn't know if we would be getting home at one time.
"It was so scary, one minute he was as right as rain, he had a good walk on the coast, and then within hours he was lifeless."
After being tube fed, he received IV fluids and medications, thankfully their dog is now slowly recovering.
She added: "Me and my husband felt really distressed, we were extremely upset over Christmas not having an answer.
"He was losing so much weight and becoming weaker. Every day I was really worried."
Helen claims there is something strange going on along the coast, and if she knew this beforehand, her husband would have avoided the beach.
She said: "He will have been picking up sand granules off chasing the balls.
"It is frightening that there could be such toxins around and whoever is responsible for this should be accountable.
"It is appalling and frightening,
