Coronation Street star Jack James Ryan has opened up about the shock of being diagnosed with testicular cancer when he was just 19.The actor, now 24, portrays reformed drug dealer Jacob Hay on the ITV soap and revealed how he was first diagnosed in 2017. Luckily, the Corrie star caught it early but he revealed he still feels he is lucky to be alive. Jack revealed: “Every day I get on set I think: ‘Wow, this could have been so different.
“I don’t take anything for granted anymore. I did before, but I don’t now – I know how lucky I am. “When I was diagnosed with cancer, I did think there was a possibility I might not make it.
But I did and I’m living my dream. I’m just so glad that things turned out well and I’m grateful that I’m here. I’m loving every second of it,” he told the Mirror.
Jack was studying at drama school when he returned to his mum Maranna’s house in Manchester for the Easter holidays and discovered a lump. Maranna and his older sister Rebecca, who is best known for playing Adam Barlow’s stalker ex-girlfriend Lydia Chambers in Corrie, were both in the house at the time. Jack recalled: “My sister had a friend round.
I screamed: ‘Rebecca! Rebecca!’ She ran upstairs and I told her that her friend had to go. She asked her to leave and she came back upstairs with my mum and I told them what I’d found.” Embarrassment over testicular cancer is one of the reasons many men ignore lumps and Jack says he too faced the feeling on his visit to the GP the next day. “It was a trainee doctor and she was a young, pretty girl.
