The cast of Coronation Street dedicated its BAFTA award on Sunday to Sophie Lancaster in a moving moment at the ceremony. The best soap award was accepted by actress Sally Dynevor, Sally Webster in Corrie, who dedicated it to tragic Sophie and her mother Sylvia. Sophie was murdered in August 2007 aged 20 after being targeted along with her boyfriend Robert Maltby for wearing dreadlocked hair, dark clothing and piercings.
Robert woke from a coma a week after the attack but Sophie tragically died. Coronation Street worked with Sophie’s mum Sylvia for the hate crime storyline which saw characters Seb and his goth girlfriend Nina attacked. The story shocked viewers and brought back painful memories of Sophie’s death. It even led to 136 people calling Ofcom to complain about the brutal attack scenes which were shown.
Following Sophie’s death, her mum Sylvia established the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a charity which works to stamp out prejudice and intolerance. Sylvia was appointed an OBE for her campaign work and died in April .
