'Confused' cyclist rides wrong way along motorway into oncoming traffic

This is the bizarre and dangerous moment a cyclist was caught riding a bike the wrong way along a motorway towards oncoming traffic.
The video footage - captured by a passing motorist on his dash-cam - shows the cyclist riding towards a National Highways vehicle, which is reversing. Panniers can be seen over the bike's wheels and he appears to be carrying a bag over his shoulder.
The scenes played out at just after 12.30pm today - Wednesday - on a northbound stretch of the M61 motorway, near Kearsley Spur in Bolton.
The motorist said he passed the cyclist at 55mph at the time. The rider wasn't in a live lane, but on a stretch of hard shoulder next to a grass verge.
The 61-year-old, from Bolton, told the Manchester Evening News : "I was in my car travelling back from Manchester towards Bolton and had pulled off onto the slip road from the East Lancashire Road.
"I was heading northbound and came around a corner and there he was. There was a National Highways vehicle reversing as the cyclist approached him. He was peddling at the time and was wearing a helmet.
"It was just bizarre and dangerous. The bike appeared to be heavily-loaded as if he was heading somewhere. It is not the first time I have seen something bizarre on this stretch of motorway.
"Obviously I couldn't stop so I don't know whether the police were called or what happened to him. The motorway was reasonably quiet at the time but he was clearly putting himself and others in danger.
"I reckon Highways England were tipped off by a camera and went out to intercept him."
