Why does it always have to be snakes? Well, what says great peril more than a chamber full of the slithering reptiles? That’s how we first meet daring adventurers Dash and Lovemore, tied up on the floor in a tomb straight out of an ‘Indiana Jones’ movie. The two share barbs while menaced by a cartoonish villain and his henchman until one by one they all get deleted by author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock), tired of the cliche-ridden world she’s created.
Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticYou know studio movies are in a rut when, amid endless Spider-Bat sequels, you find yourself longing for the likes of such escapist 1980s offerings as “Romancing the Stone” and “King Solomon’s Mines.” I can’t be the only one who’s been craving a good old-fashioned treasure hunt, where the leads throw sparks and the ladies’ makeup never smudges, no matter how close to the volcano they get. After a long stretch without such a big-screen Hollywood adventure movie (at least, not one without ties to a video game or theme park ride), “The Lost City” makes for welcome counter-programming.The story was producer Seth Gordon’s idea, but credit siblings Adam and Aaron Nee (who tested the waters with their Mark Twain-inspired “Band of Robbers”) for sprucing up the formula, while Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum supply the chemistry.
Matt Donnelly Senior Film WriterSandra Bullock brought the star power back in-person to the SXSW Film Festival on Saturday night, unveiling her new romantic adventure “The Lost City.”Flanked by costar Daniel Radcliffe and directors Adam and Aaron Nee, fans across multiple generations packed Austin’s Paramount Theatre to watch Bullock tangle in the jungle with her costar Channing Tatum. The Paramount Pictures release sees Bullock as a widowed romance novelist whose latest book tour is eclipsed by the himbo model who graces her covers (Tatum). Turns out, her fact-based plots about an ancient culture offer credible clues to the location of a priceless treasure, and a petulant billionaire (Radcliffe) kidnaps Bullock to recover it.
