Bob Rafelson Appreciation: As Producer and Director, He Helped Craft the New Hollywood

The recent limited series “The Offer” reminded viewers that before Albert S. Ruddy was taken seriously as the producer of “The Godfather,” he was often dismissed as the guy who created “Hogan’s Heroes.” Similarly, another key architect of the New Hollywood of the 1970s — director and producer Bob Rafelson — would find himself earning greater respect as the man behind such iconic, essential American films as “Five Easy Pieces,” “The Last Picture Show” and “Easy Rider” than as one of the creators of “The Monkees.”The difference, of course, is that “Hogan’s Heroes” is the kind of old sitcom contemporary audiences would call “problematic,” while “The Monkees” has endured both as a screwball piece of television and as the launching pad for a band that’s beloved to this day.

Angelique Jackson Producers of the indie film musical “Americana Dream” have tapped Nashville-based music artists Mary Sarah and Sam Varga to play the story’s central couple, Billie Carton and Lucky Fontana.Sarah and Varga nabbed the leading roles after an extensive nationwide search for singer-songwriters to act in the original musical written and directed by Ate de Jong and co-written by Variety’s Steven Gaydos.“Americana Dream” takes viewers behind the scenes of the film’s titular reality TV music competition program, where Lucky and Billie transition from imposters willing to do anything for money and fame, to a real couple, willing to sacrifice their dreams of success for real love and their real music. Japanese Breakfast cancels New York show at venue hosting far-right conspiracy event

Japanese Breakfast (aka Michelle Zauner) has cancelled her upcoming show in Rochester, New York, after the venue it was booked at committed to hosting an event for right-wing conspiracy theorists. The show was scheduled to take place at the Main Street Armory on Tuesday September 27, as part of a North American tour consisting of headline shows, festival appearances (such as Here And There, Austin City Limits and the Pitchfork Music Festival) and gigs opening for The National, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Florence + The Machine. The Rochester date has been cancelled, Stereogum reports, because the Armory has decided to move ahead with its booking for the ‘Reawaken America’ tour – a travelling conference that hosts speakers known for espousing dangerous, xenophobic rhetoric and widely disproven conspiracy theories.Among the key talking points platformed on the tour is the false theory that 2020’s US presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump, and arguments against the implementation of measures to combat COVID-19. Two Rochester stops on that tour are slated to go ahead on Friday August 12 and Saturday 13 – neither are listed on the venue’s website, however several of the speakers’ own sites have them billed with tickets available.Announcing her show’s cancellation on Twitter overnight, Zauner wrote: “We have cancelled the event because a number of people reached out letting us know they were boycotting the venue because of the Reawaken America tour.

‘A Far Shore’ Review: Sexist Exploitation in Poverty-Line Japan Gets a Searing Exposé With a Lyrical Edge

Jessica Kiang “Okinawan kindness leaves no one behind!” goes the chirpy sign-off on a political radio commercial halfway through Japanese director Masaaki Kudo’s artful and affecting Karlovy Vary competition title, “A Far Shore.” Already it plays like the bitterest irony. Aoi, a 17-year-old mother working illegally as a nightclub hostess in Okinawa, the poorest prefecture in Japan, listens with a dissociated look in her eyes: She has been left behind by practically everyone, and while Kudo’s film is deeply compassionate toward the struggling, stubborn, subjugated teen, this is an Okinawa of precious little kindness. We first meet Aoi — rivetingly played by Kotone Hanase — at work with her lissome best friend Mio (Yumemi Ishida), also a minor, as the girls giggle, drink and flirt with a couple of guys in town for a good time.

The Mars Volta announce new single ‘Graveyard Love’ and more US tour dates

The Mars Volta have detailed another new single, ‘Graveyard Love’, as well as an extension of their US tour. The announcement follows the release of their first new music in ten years with ‘Blacklight Shine’, shared last month (June 21).The Texas-formed band released six studio albums between 2003 and 2012 before splitting due to a falling-out between founding members Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López.The pair quickly made amends, however, and formed a new group, Antemasque. They also revamped their pre-Mars Volta outfit, At-the-Drive-In, for a new record in 2017.“They will seek your ruin, and burn your lands, because if they can’t have you, no one can,” Cedric Bixler-Zavala offered as a cryptic description of ‘Graveyard Love’, which will be released on Friday (July 8) alongside a new short film. The Mars Volta previewed ‘Blacklight Shine’ by setting up a mysterious box installation in Los Angeles’ Grand Park, which plays new material from the band when you walk inside.Last month, an audio-visual art installation was also erected in Los Angeles’ Grand Park, titled ‘L’YTOME HODORXÍ TELESTERION’, where they previewed ‘Blacklight Shine’.
