19.03.2023 - 12:49
struggling for a long time in Emmerdale with symptoms that seemed to be linked to her periods – she’s suffered from irritability, mood swings and anxiety and despite being put on the pill which has helped with her heavy periods, her emotional and psychological problems haven’t been any better. Last week we saw her worrying her friends with her reckless behaviour as she put her life in danger, and Bob (Tony Audenshaw) finally realised his daughter wasn’t dealing with the normal problems of adolescence and needed proper help.
In coming episodes, Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) and Wendy (Susan Cookson) finally get to the bottom of what’s been going on for poor Cathy when Manpreet tells Bob that his daughter is suffering from Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that causes a range of physical and emotional symptoms every month between ovulation and the start of the period.
Symptoms can include mood swings, lack of energy, hopelessness, feeling overwhelmed and even suicidal thoughts as well as increased anger and sleep problems. As Manpreet is explaining this to Bob, and saying it could affect Cathy for decades, they don’t realise that Cathy is eavesdropping.
Bob decides he won’t tell her about the diagnosis until it can be confirmed but Cathy walks in and reveals she’s heard everything. She’s devastated and though Bob tries to reassure her that they’ll get through it, she’s not ready to hear it – and rushes off.
When Bob goes to find her he can’t track her down. Where has Cathy gone? And how will she come to terms with the diagnosis? For even more exclusive spoilers and interviews, sign up to Metro's Soaps newsletter
