Police have locked down the area around the First Minister's official residence amid an ongoing incident in the area.
Officers were called to Charlotte Square, home to Bute House, in the last hour. Edinburgh Live reports that officers were seen rushing to the scene at around 8.30pm, with three vehicles in attendance.
An officer was said to have entered Bute House, now the official residence of Humza Yousaf, before a cordon was established. Witnesses have suggested that a member of the public threw "something" into the basement of the building, sparking alarm.
An eyewitness told Edinburgh Live: "A member of security staff said someone threw something into the basement. The police went down to check it out then came back up and cordoned off the street."
Officers have reportedly now left the scene. It is unclear if any threat was posed to the wider public.
Police Scotland and the Scottish Government have been contacted for comment.
