Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes have been told to put off contract talks until the end of the season as John Barnes believes the discussions won't be an "issue".
The 27-year-old has had a difficult season so far this campaign, after his hat-trick on the opening day, as he has failed to match the lofty, and prolific, heights of his first 18 months in England. But Fernandes has looked back to his best in his last two outings with a brace against Aston Villa before providing two assists against Brentford.
With the Reds heading towards a turning point with a new manager set to take over the helm in the summer, Fernandes' future has been much of the discussion, despite having two years remaining on his deal.
But the former England international believes the Portuguese playmaker should wait until the next manager arrives at Old Trafford and then begin negotiations in the summer.
He told BonusCodeBets: "Bruno Fernandes’ current contract is at two and a half years. Come the end of the season that is maybe more of a talking point, but I don't think he needs to be thinking about now.
"From his perspective [Fernandes] you can’t sign a contract you've been offered if you don’t know who the manager is going to be, whether you’ll be part of his plans, and what his ideas are. It’s quite straightforward.
"So really, that's the situation they have to sort out before worrying about Bruno. I don’t see it as an issue at all, there is two and a half years left on his deal, they just need to sort it out in the summer."
