Broadway Box Office Drops 14% To $19.7 Million During First Week Of March

In a post-shutdown theatrical market where box office success has been defined by films that won the interest of men under 35, “The Lost City” has renewed hope that audiences in other demographics will show up to theaters even during the pandemic when studios offer quality material that isn’t a big blockbuster. It’s also a victory for one of the film’s stars, Channing Tatum, who already drew strong turnout from women last month with his previous film “Dog” and like that title was heavily involved in social media promotion for “The Lost City.” With stars like Tatum and Sandra Bullock in lead roles, Daniel Radcliffe and Brad Pitt in supporting positions and plenty of on-location shooting, “The Lost City” had a much bigger production budget than most romantic comedies with a reported $68-70 million spend and still has work to do to reach theatrical profitability.

The film, which puts a fresh coat of varnish on “Romancing the Stone” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” earned $2.5 million in Thursday previews.

The first big studio wide release in three weeks, Paramount’s The Lost City, kicked off at 3,400 theaters yesterday at 4PM for a $2.5M take. I understand that number doesn’t include any of the previous weekend Fandango previews or those at the AMC earlier in the week. The movie is expected to hit $25M, but it would not be shocking if it lands in the $30M-range. Rotten Tomatoes reviews are at 75% fresh.

While the female demographic has shown to be one of the more reluctant to return to cinemas during the pandemic, that is set to change this weekend with Paramount’s The Lost City which is eyeing a mid $20M start, possible $30M+ take at 4,228 theaters.

All but six of the current 22 Broadway productions filled more than 90% of their available seats last week, and most of the ones that didn’t hit that mark came close, according to the first detailed box office figures released this season by the Broadway League.

While the threat of another industry-crippling COVID-19 wave still looms, the end of this past winter’s Omicron surge has given new hope to indie and specialty distributors trying to get moviegoers back into arthouses. But like the wider blockbuster scene, the biggest specialty success was driven by younger moviegoers with “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which scored another victory for Sony’s import wing Crunchyroll.

The March 12 date of the three-night ‘Permission to Dance on Stage: Seoul’ was also made available for “live viewing” in theatres worldwide, giving international fans a chance to witness the boyband’s return to the stage.According to The Hollywood Reporter, BTS’ ‘Permission to Dance on Stage: Seoul’ earned $6.9million (£5,288,840) in 800 theatres across North America, becoming the top-grossing live cinema event of all time.
