A British tourist was allegedly raped in front of her partner while on holiday in India, local media reports.
The woman was allegedly attacked by a man at the famous Sweet Lake in Goa on June 2.
Authorities confirmed yesterday that a 32-year-old suspect had been arrested over the alleged rape, the Mirror reports.
The is accused of sexually assaulting her under the pretext of giving her a massage and is believed to be part of a group that offers illegal massages near the Arambol beach, according to local media.
The woman consulted with her family and the British embassy in India before issuing a formal complaint yesterday to police, it was said.
Police swooped in and arrested the man within an hour of the complaint being made, police said.
The accused had previously worked as a school librarian, a senior official said.
They said: "We have contacted the police station concerned to get his past records. Currently, he is not working as a librarian."
Both the accused and the woman were sent to a hospital last night for a medical examination.
The man is set to appear before a local court next Monday.
An FCDO Spokesperson said: “We are providing consular support to a British National in Goa”.
In 2018, which is the last available year for statistics, about 295,000 Brits travelled to Goa for holiday.
It is a popular destination for their tropcial beaches and unique culture as Goa is a former Portuguese colony.
