A British tourist has tragically drowned while on a trip abroad to Crete in the third death the Greek resort has seen in a matter of days. The woman, who is believed to be Welsh, was discovered on the afternoon of Oct, 5 after her lifeless body was swept ashore to Almyrida beach near Chania.
Locals were left horrified by the shocking incident as rescuers performed CPR on the female for over half an hour but she sadly could not be resuscitated. The holiday maker was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead by doctors, the Mirror reports.
The Welsh woman's dreadful death is the latest tragedy on the coast after authorities made the debatable decision to eliminate lifeguards to watch the beach. It is also the second death of a Brit in Greece in recent months after a student was killed by a helicopter blade in Athens.
Student Jack Fenton died instantly when the rear rotor blade of the Bell 407 hit him in the head in July. The 22-year-old who studied at Oxford Brooks University - was in the Greek capital after a brief holiday in Mykonos with friends.
Jack's heartbroken mum Victoria has now shared how the family has been left "completely devastated" after losing her "wonderful boy".
She told the MailOnline: "We only found out what happened at 10pm last night. We are completely devastated. He was the most wonderful boy. I think the pilot is in custody, but it was the most horrible of accidents by the looks of it."
She added that Mr Fenton had exited the helicopter safely after it landed, but went behind it and was killed instantly by the rear propeller. Mr Fenton was described as "very popular" by the headteacher of his former school in Maidstone, Kent.
