BREAKING: Man found dead on M61 as police shut off motorway for hours

A man has died after police were called to a 'concern for welfare' report on the M61.
Police said they were called to 'reports of concern for the welfare' of a man at junction five near Bolton at around 8.30am yesterday (Wednesday). The man, aged in his 50s, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, police added. Following the incident, a stretch of the motorway between junction four and five near Bolton was fully closed off.

The southbound carriageway then remained blocked for several hours as investigations were carried out at the scene. All lanes were reopened by around 12.30pm.
In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Yesterday (12 October 2022), at around 8:30am, officers received reports of concern for the welfare of a man in his 50s near junction 5 on the M61.
"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death."
