If you live in L.A. and you’re a fan of roots or Americana music, you may keep the monthly Watkins Family Hour shows at Largo on that checklist of reasons not to check out— because in what other city are you going to find such a reliable monthly gathering of the contemporary folk-rock tribe? For 20 years now (maybe 21 — no one thought to start a count in the early 2000s), Sean Watkins and Sara Watkins have been convening some of the top musicians in Southern California, especially those with an acoustic bent, to join them at Largo for (mostly) monthly shows that bring a sense of community to a town where that’s not always easy to find. The extent to which the small, clubby theater enforces its no-phones policy means that potential fans definitely hear about the shows through word-of-mouth, not word-of-video.

But she’s returned to reign over the chart as a solo artist with “Break My Soul,” which ascends to the No. 1 position after having first hit the Hot 100 six weeks ago.
It reaches that pinnacle in the same chart week that sees her “Renaissance” album debuting on the Billboard 200 chart at No. 1.The last time Beyoncé stood atop the songs chart by herself was back in 2008, when “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” dominated the Hot 100 for four weeks.Since then, she’d shared the No. 1 spot with Sheeran for five weeks with their 2017 duet on “Perfect,” and took hold of it again with a single week in 2020 when she and Megan went to the top with a remix of the latter artist’s “Savage.” Prior to these collaborations, she’d had five No.
1s on her own between 2003-2008. Figuring in the more recent collabs, the artist now has her eight No. 1s to her name, following the four she’d had in 1999-2001 as a member of Destiny’s Child.
It’s now been 23 years and three weeks since her first No. 1, DC’s “Bills, Bills, Bills.”The July 29 release of “Renaissance” was obviously a big factor in upping consumption for “Break My Soul” and pushing it to No. 1.

People, like for instance, Adele, who said that “the artist of my life is Beyoncé” and “the ‘Lemonade’ album was just so monumental… A piece of me died inside. I felt like it was her time to win. What the fuck does she have to do to win album of the year?” The victor navigated the space between pride and embarrassment in the moment of her acceptance speeches and backstage press conferences as best she could. It’s not a position she’d likely be especially eager to find herself in again. Yet she well could, with the front-runners for the top 2023 Grammys essentially boiling down to… Beyoncé and Adele. And, yes, plenty of third-party candidates to be named at a later date. But for all practical intents and purposes, a little over five months out from the February 2023 telecast date, it is looking like déjà vu all over again, with a list of truly serious contenders for the top prize that runs the gamut from A to B.

It trails only Harry Styles’ latest, as 2022 album premieres go.The debut figure for “Renaissance” was 332,000 equivalent album units, per Luminate Data, as reported Sunday in Billboard — a tally that represents the best first week for a female artist this year.“Renaissance” came in short of supplanting Styles’ “Harry’s House” as the top-debuting album of the year; Styles’ collection bowed with 521,000 units in June.
