New research has revealed that the uptake rate for cervical screening has dropped significantly during the pandemic, and is now at its lowest in decades. The research, carried out by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, found that almost one in three women are not attending having been invited for a smear test, with the charity now aiming to encourage women to book an appointment if they are overdue a screening. The extremely low rate of attendance is said to be as a result of the impact of the pandemic, with many having to attend appointments on their own, and also feeling isolated if they are diagnosed with cervical cell changes.
Research shows that 29 per cent of women diagnosed during the pandemic felt isolated, while just 15 per cent felt isolated prior to the pandemic. Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust have also uncovered a huge lack of education surrounding cervical cell changes diagnoses, and are campaigning to change that. You can sign up at the top of the page. Many who are diagnoses feel ashamed, unprepared, and frightened, with most knowing nothing or very little about cervical cell changes. Around 220,000 women are diagnosed every year, but the charity found that just over a quarter - 26 per cent - of the 1,086 people surveyed said they felt ashamed after they had been diagnosed.
Cell changes are caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and over 70 per cent of those participating in the study recalled having a HPV diagnosis. Many told how they felt guilty, confused, or angry after being diagnosed with HPV, while others expressed feelings of embarrassment or shame. Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust is now trying to educate
