Toal has made more than 150 appearances for Derry and scored six goals. This season, he has turned out 20 times in the League of Ireland Premier Division and scored once.
Wanderers have already had a bid turned down for the defender already for a player they would like to sign this summer. The Whites retain a transfer interest in Toal and he would complement options on the right hand side of the defence.
The Candystripes have recently been knocked out of European competition at the hands of Riga FC in the Europa Conference Leaguee first qualifying round. Derry boss Ruaidhri Higgins admitted after the game that he did not know if Toal had played his last game for the club or not.
But the Manchester Evening News understands that Wanderers have been successful with a return bid for Toal and that he is poised to become Bolton's fourth transfer window signing this summer. It is understood he will have a medical with the League One side early this week.
