From multi-million dollar homes in gated LA communities to lavish yacht trips on tropical islands, the rise of social media has allowed regular people like us to get a glimpse of how the other half do actually live.

Christopher Vourlias When a young Viesturs Kairiss started to dream about becoming a filmmaker thirty-some-odd years ago, he knew his path wouldn’t be straightforward or easy. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, aspiring Latvian directors would have to travel to Moscow or St. Petersburg to enroll in venerable Soviet film schools. After independence, Kairiss was among the first class of graduates from the newly launched film studies program at the Latvian Academy of Culture, one of many ways in which the small Baltic republic attempted to assert its own identity after half a century of Soviet rule. “We didn’t have any technique,” Kairiss admits of he and his film school peers, laughing. For his first feature film, “Leaving by the Way” (2001), he enlisted friends for below-the-line work and recruited actors from the local theater school. When the film bowed in the Crystal Globe competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, it was the culmination of what he describes as “a totally crazy, passionate journey” for a group of filmmakers laboring in an industry that didn’t truly exist.

Black Sabbath is set to release a career-spanning autobiography later this year. Titled Into the Void: From Birth to Black Sabbath – and Beyond, the autobiography is due to hit bookshelves on June 6, and will trace the founding Black Sabbath bassist’s personal and professional life. The latter topic will include a recount of Black Sabbath’s multiple line-up changes and internal struggles, as well as the band’s “beginnings as a scrappy blues quartet”, according to an official synopsis.“A rollicking, effusive, and candid memoir by the heavy metal musician and founding member of Black Sabbath, covering his years as the band’s bassist and main lyricist through his later-career projects, and detailing how one of rock’s most influential bands formed and prevailed,” the synopsis adds.Into the Void is said to include appearances and mentions of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and The Who.

Taylor Swift has hit back at a lawsuit filed by writer Teresa La Dart over similarities between a book of poetry written by the latter and a publication that accompanied the deluxe version of the former’s 2019 ‘Lover’ album. The lawsuit is, says Team Swift, “legally and factually baseless”.La Dart sued last year accusing Swift of ripping off various creative elements of her 2010 poetry book, which was also called ‘Lover’.The lawsuit claimed that the earlier ‘Lover’ poetry book and the later ‘Lover’ album book had “a substantially similar cover format”, “substantially the same introduction page formats with a similarly styled ‘Lover’ title”, “a substantially similar inner book design” and “a substantially similar colour scheme (pastel pinks and blues)”.“Stylistically”, La Dart’s lawsuit concluded, “the Swift ‘Lover’ book includes creative elements that are not typical of or present within other published books and – as compared with the La Dart work – leaves an overall impression that the Swift ‘Lover’ book is, again, substantially similar in terms of the above-noted design elements as those within the La Dart work”.That was all well and good, but are any of the creative elements shared by the two ‘Lover’ books actually protected by copyright?
