Kennedy Center Honors to Celebrate Dionne Warwick, Billy Crystal, Queen Latifah, Barry Gibb, Renée Fleming

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Dionne Warwick, Billy Crystal, Queen Latifah, Barry Gibb and Renée Fleming have been set as the five arts figures due to be celebrated at the 46th annual Kennedy Center Honors, with a ceremony taking place Dec. 3 in Washington, D.C. The ceremony will take place Dec. 3 and be filmed for later broadcast airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Four of the five honorees hail from the world of music, although Queen Latifah has shifted her focus toward acting in recent years. The ratio is not an uncommon one for the Kennedy Center Honors: Last year’s ceremony honored U2, Amy Grant, Tania León and Gladys Knight, leaving George Clooney the odd acting man out.

Ariel Marx and Este Haim on How the Music of ‘A Small Light’ Brought Fresh Shadings to Heroic Holocaust Drama

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension. Este Haim took on the EMP job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,” she produced episode-ending covers of songs from the first half of the 20th century, performed by Angel Olsen, Moses Sumney, Kamasi Washington, Sharon Van Etten with Michael Imperioli, Remi Wolf, Weyes Blood, duet partners Orville Peck and King Princess, and her sister Danielle.

Elton John has created a “brand new show” for Glastonbury 2023

Elton John has revealed that he has developed a “brand new show” for his set at Glastonbury 2023.The singer-songwriter announced the update in a new interview with BBC Radio One — where he admitted that he has already planned for the upcoming set to be unlike any of his past performances. He is set to take to the stage on Sunday for the final night of the 2023 instalment (June 25), and will perform on the Pyramid Stage as part of the music icon slot. The gig will also mark the final date of his mammoth Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which has spanned over 350 dates across the course of five years.Originally, the farewell tour was set to draw to a close in 2021 — allowing the now-76-year-old to spend more time with his family — however, this was later rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and later by a hip injury he sustained last year. Now, according to the new interview, it seems that the ‘Rocketman’ singer is looking to end his live shows with a bang, and has planned for the Sunday set to feel like a “brand new show”.“I’m starting with a song I haven’t played for about 10 years, so we’ll see how it goes,” he began.

‘Entergalactic’ Director Fletcher Moules On A Music-Forward Narrative & Showing The “Artist’s Hand” In Animation

After hearing early demos from Kid Cudi, director Fletcher Moules knew he could connect with the vision of bringing a visual album to life through animation. Serving as an animated companion piece to Kid Cudi’s album of the same name, Entergalactic follows street artist Jabari (Cudi) as he is on the cusp of bringing his art to life in comics. His life changes when he falls for his neighbor Meadow (Jessica Williams), a photographer about to stage an exhibition. It was important for Moules that this special be a character-driven concept album, rather than one long music video, so the story and animation style were essential to get right.

Normani Speaks Out About Her Father's Cancer Diagnosis a Year After Her Mother's Second Cancer Battle

Normani has revealed that her father, Derrick Hamilton, was diagnosed with cancer one year after her mother, Andrea, battled cancer for a second time. The former Fifth Harmony singer made the revelation in a promotional collaboration with, in which she opened up about how music has been a safe haven for her and her family."(When my mom was going through chemo) the thing that really kept her going was getting on FaceTime and being like, 'How are the sessions going?' She's always so eager to hear the new records we've been working on," she said. «And then a year later when my dad ended up being diagnosed, he would say mid-treatment, 'I'm ready for you to take over the world.'»It's unclear if Derrick is still battling cancer.

Brandi Carlile’s Phenomenal Weekend at the Gorge Showed Why We Don’t Just Need Joni Mitchell Back, but Lilith Fair, Too

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic No one could deny that there were star-driven aspects to this past weekend of shows at one of America’s most beloved outdoor venues, the Gorge, all of them headlined or organized by Brandi Carlile. That was apparent soon enough for anyone driving out of Seattle-Takoma Airport to make the three-hour drive to the remote amphitheater in the middle of Washington state, as the freeways were dotted with cars with “Brandi or Bust!” (or messages about the “Bramily”) emblazoned on their rear windshields. And Carlile wasn’t the biggest star appearing over the three nights. No one lords over a cult of personality right now, actively or passively, quite like Joni Mitchell. Not so very long ago, Mitchell was more or less seen as one boomer icon among many, yet she has somehow just in the past few years graduated — with no campaigning on her part, but with valuable microbursts of assistance from Carlile — to being arguably the most revered North American singer-songwriter of any generation. Bob Dylan can only be looking on a little jealously at how his old friend and rival has kind of quietly been pushed ahead of him in the line, even as she did not much more than stay out of sight and work to recover from a debilitating aneurysm.

‘The Inventor’ Illustrates Leonardo DaVinci’s Final Days Through Music and Stop-Motion Animation

Karen Idelson Few people lived a life as bold and controversial as Leonardo da Vinci. It’s easy to forget sometimes he was also a human being with doubts who struggled with the same things that trouble just about all of us. In animated feature “The Inventor,” writer/director Jim Capobianco, who shared an original screenplay Oscar nomination with Brad Bird and Jan Pinkava for “Ratatouille,” was always interested in the more personal side of the famed painter and inventor. “The Inventor” combines traditional 2D and stop-motion animation as well as original music and lyrics by Alex Mandel.    “I’m telling the story of [da Vinci] at the end of his life and years in France,” says Capobianco. “I knew he was going to die [at the end of the story] and I was asking what that means to a man like Leonardo da Vinci. Having researched him, I learned that he believed that he procrastinated a lot and he thought he didn’t finish a lot of the things he set out to do. So, I thought about what it would mean to this person, this character. I realized it’s about what you leave behind for others and how you affect other people with what you do, how you change other people’s lives while you’re here. I realized with Leonardo da Vinci, he’s the perfect kind of foil for that because here I am making a film about him 500 years after he lived, and we still talk about him. He has such an impact on us and the idea of invention and the idea of curiosity and everything he accomplished.”
