As if there aren’t already enough awards handed out in the movie and TV business, BAFTA has decided we need some more for North America.
The organization, which has annually handed out Honorary Awards at a once a year black tie dinner in Beverly Hills (the last being in a pre-pandemic 2019, especially memorable for a Jane Fonda taped acceptance speech as she was being arrested during a protest in D.C.) has decided to expand that activitity and “evolve” that ceremony, which were known as the Britannia Awards, into a year round and more targeted enterprise, thus the newly renamed BAFTA Special Awards which will continue to go to “those that have made a significant, inspiring and outstanding contribution to film, games and television through a particular project(s) and/or their work”.
Special Awards recipients in North America will receive the traditional BAFTA mask with presentations throughout the year replacing the aforementioned yearly dinner (usually at the Beverly Hilton), with the inaugural event expected to take place in Los Angeles, although no word yet as to who will be the recipient or when it will happen. Special Awards are in the gift of BAFTA and recipients can be put forward by members, the sector committees and the BAFTA North America Board, chaired by Kathryn Busby.
The implementation of this new way of presenting BAFTA awards outide the high profile British-based ceremonies for Film and TV annually taking place in London, comes following the group’s reevaluation of giving their honorary awards, and following a year after the organization’s increase of North America operations that has already included expanding membership benefits, growing its Learning, Inclusion and Talent programs, and an inaugural

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor In a telling example of the state of the touring industry in 2022, indie artist Santigold has canceled her upcoming North American tour, citing the “devastating” costs due to inflation, soaring costs and the glut of artists on the road after pandemic restrictions lifted early this year. “As a touring musician, I don’t think anyone anticipated the new reality that awaited us,” she wrote in a long and impassioned post on Instagram. “After sitting idle (not being able to do shows) for the past couple years, many of us like everyone else, earning no or little income during that time, every musician that could, rushed back out immediately when it was deemed safe to do shows. We were met with the height of inflation — gas, tour buses, hotels, and flight costs skyrocketed — many of our tried-and-true venues unavailable due to a flooded market of artists trying to book shows in the same cities, and positive test results constantly halting schedules with devastating financial consequences.

Manori Ravindran International Editor BAFTA is expanding its U.S. awards activity with the year-round presentation of Special Awards to recipients in North America. BAFTA Special Awards are honorary awards presented to those who have made a significant contribution to film, games and television through a particular project or their overall body of work. The Special Awards, which among others include the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award and the Fellowship Award, are a mainstay of the British Academy’s U.K. prizes. BAFTA says these year-round awards are an “evolution” of the Britannia Awards ceremony, an event that was previously hosted once a year in Los Angeles, and which last took place in 2019. The org has made clear to Variety that the Britannia’s aren’t necessarily canceled, but will rather take on a different shape as more awards are presented across the calendar year.
