‘Bad Sisters’ Wins Best Drama Series – BAFTA TV Awards

Channel 4 will axe part of its hit reality TV show SAS: Who Dares Wins after a run of eight series.The hit show sees a group of ex-army officials put a group of recruits through its Special Air Services training process, testing both emotional and physical strength in brutal challenges. But after a run of eight series, having first aired in 2015, Channel 4 have confirmed they will be axing the civilian version of the military training show.

Pierre Creton, has won the SACD Prize, awarded by France’s Writers’ Guild for the best French-language movie in the section. Written by Mathilde Girard, Cyril Neyrat and Vincent Barré, and directed by Creton, who combines his film career with work as an agricultural labourer, “A Prince” has weighed in at this year’s Directors Fortnight as one of the most singular of titles, whose central narrative turns on a horticultural student, Pierre-Joseph. His mentors, botany teacher Alberto and plant nursery owner Adrien, soon become his lovers.

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent “Creatura,” the feature debut of Elena Martín, exploring female sexual desire and repression, has won this year’s 20th Europa Cinemas Cannes Label for best European Film at the 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Announced Thursday by Europa Cinemas, ahead of the closing ceremony this afternoon, the prize is one of two at Directors’ Fortnight, and awarded by one of the sidebar’s partners, given the section is non-competitive.   A second partner plaudit, the SACD Prize, handed out by France’s Writers’ Guild, will be announced simultaneously to the Europa Cinemas Label. 

Naman Ramachandran Daryl McCormack is set to feature alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s “Twisters,” a sequel to 1996’s “Twister,” Variety has learned. McCormack will play a supporting role to Daisy Edgar Jones’ character, Variety understands. “Minari” helmer Lee Isaac Chung is directing the film from a script by “The Revenant” writer Mark L. Smith. “Twisters” is set to release on July 19, 2024. McCormack starred with Emma Thompson in “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” for which he was nominated for leading actor at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards. He was also nominated for the BAFTA EE Rising Star Award. The actor’s credits also include hit series “Bad Sisters,” for which he was nominated in the best actor in a supporting role – drama category at the Irish Film and Television Awards.

The BAFTA TV Awards made a welcome return to our TV screens, with dozens of stars gathering to celebrate the most prestigious awards in British television.The annual awards bash tonight, 14 May, was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and took place at The Royal Festival Hall in London. As most awards ceremonies are, the evening was filled with laughter, tears and glamorous red carpet looks, and some TV stars even walked away with two awards.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were the brunt of the joke at tonight's BAFTA TV Awards, as Queuegate got another mention. As co-hosts Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan gave a shoutout to Imelda Staunton, the former quipped: "She's nominated for her performance in The Crown... apparently Phil and Holly got to watch that a couple of days before everybody else!" Letting out a laugh, Ranganathan, 45, said: "Little bit of edge for you early doors! How d'ya like that?" as Beckett, 37, noted "all the ITV guys" trying to keep a straight face.

The leading actress BAFTA has been given to Kate Winslet for her performance in I Am Ruth, which sees a mother and daughter work through emotional turmoil.The 47-year-old actress: “[I am] guaranteed to be the one of the night to cry, I can’t see...” She added that “small British television dramas can be mighty” and mental health stories such as this one “need to be heard”. She said: “If I could break it in half, I would give the other half to my daughter Mia Threapleton, we did this together, kiddo.” As she said the words, the camera cut to her daughter, who cried as she put her hands to her mouth, blew her mother some kisses, and mouthed the words: "I love you." Kate went on to praise her daughter, Mia, as she said, honestly: "There were days when it was agony for her to dig as deeply as she did, into very frightening emotional territory, sometimes - it took my breath away." She continued: "I Am Ruth was made for parents and their children.

Naman Ramachandran “Bad Sisters” co-creator Sharon Horgan is actively participating in the ongoing WGA strike. The Apple TV+ series won drama series at the BAFTA TV Awards in London on Sunday. During her acceptance speech Horgan thanked “all our writers” because it all begins and ends with the writers, so we’re in solidarity to our WGA brothers and sisters.” Later, speaking at the winners press conference backstage, Horgan confirmed that all her U.S. projects are on hold at the moment. “All of my U.S. projects are just like in a pile now,” Horgan said. Anne-Marie Duff, who won the supporting actress BAFTA for “Bad Sisters,” celebrated the current “extraordinary age of television.”

Kate Winslet joined daughter and co-star Mia Threapleton at the British Academy Television Awards at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday. The Hollywood actress, 47, who is nominated for Best Actress for drama I Am Ruth, in which she starred alongside her daughter, 22, slipped into a gorgeous black evening dress for the event.  She looked sensational in the little black number which featured an asymmetrical highneck design and hugged every inch of her figure.

From Hollywood royalty like Kate Winslet to Strictly stars Claudia Winkleman and Motsi Mabuse, the red carpet provided many standout fashion moments, with nominees and presenters alike pulling out all the stops for the biggest night in television. The event marks the second year in a row that Kate has been nominated for the best actress award at the TV BAFTAs, and she'll be competing against the likes of Billie Piper, Sarah Lancashire and Imelda Staunton, who all turned heads as they made their arrival outside London's Southbank Centre.
