Austin Butler Gets Best Actor Boost, ‘Everything Everywhere’ Up in the Air for Best Picture After BAFTA and DGA Split

It’s the weekend of the 2023 Academy Awards and we’re making our final predictions in all of the categories.

Considering the breathless ease of “Everything Everywhere All At Once’s” award season so far, it’s sort of remarkable how many categories are up for grabs when the Academy Awards begin on Sunday evening. Oscar’s top prize is pretty much all locked up and should reward A24 with their second Best Picture win in less than 12 years of existence.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” swept all the major guild awards, the first time that grand slam had happened in a decade and only the fifth time in history, the suspense seemed to drain out of the 95th Academy Awards. After all, how suspenseful can it be if everything goes to “Everything?” But it’d be a mistake to think that Sunday’s show won’t be a nail-biter in many ways.

Catherine Martin won for her work on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Building over 90 looks alone for Austin Butler, Martin, a triple-nominee for production design and best picture remains a favorite.

2023 SAG Awards on Sunday, but some fan-favorite shows and movies were shut out.The best actor in a film category was a tight race, but ultimately “Elvis” star Austin Butler lost to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.Fraser, 54, also scored an award at the Critics Choice Awards in January over Butler. The pair will duke it out again come March at the Oscars.However, the “Carrie Diaries” alum, 31, won the Golden Globe and BAFTA best actor awards earlier this year for his role as the King of Rock and Roll.“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett was also snubbed last night, despite earning a Golden Globe and being nominated for a BAFTA.

Everything Everywhere All at Once not just as a film title, but as a voting instruction. “Everything Everywhere” took the top award at Saturday night’s Producers Guild Awards and then won in every category it could at Sunday’s SAG Awards, setting a new record for the most SAG wins in a single night by one film.And an Oscar race that looked up in the air two days ago now has a seriously strong frontrunner.

The multiverse-hopping indie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert enters the evening with the wind at its back, having taken home the top prize on Saturday at the Producers Guild Awards, indicating that the zany film is not polarizing voters as much as some feared.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” round out the best ensemble category. “Ozark” led the TV field with four nods, with “Barry,” “Better Call Saul” and “Only Murders in the Building” each receiving three.
