Armed Forces personnel deserve better pay and pensions to help them and their families through the cost of living crisis, a report by the SNP's defence spokesman has found.
The paper by Stewart McDonald, which will be published this week, concludes the financial pressures facing members of the Royal Navy, Army and RAF are "almost unprecedented and require us to work together".
The MP for Glasgow South hopes his recommendations will attract cross-party support at a time when the defence budget is up for wider debate.
McDonald said: "Servicemen and women should be able to enjoy a decent standard of life. It is the duty of government to meet their willingness to serve - and take on all the sacrifices that that service entails - by delivering the quality terms, conditions, and services those in uniform should rightly expect."
It was announced in July that Armed Forces personnel would receive a 3.75 per cent increase (3.5 per cent for senior officers) in base pay. UK defence secretary Ben Wallace described it as "the biggest percentage uplift in 20 years".
On the issue of pay, McDonald's report said: "Armed Forces personnel have extremely limited options for demanding better pay and conditions – largely relying on charitable bodies and MPs to press their case in the absence of any statutory body.
"A formal armed forces representative body, perhaps mirroring the Police Federation, would allow armed forces personnel the ability to negotiate better pay and conditions for those who serve, and their families.
"Armed Forces personnel are consequently suffering pay cuts as inflation rises but are even worse off in comparison to other public sector workers in that they do not have any formal body to lobby for better pay on their behalf.
