Toronto Film Festival Takeaways: Steven Spielberg’s Big Moment, Netflix’s Comeback and a Moribund Market

Toronto Film Festival returned in spectacular fashion after two years of virtual premieres or limited capacity screenings. The parties were packed (which may lead to COVID outbreaks down the road, but… that’s showbiz?), the red carpets were glittering and the atmosphere was electric, bordering on euphoric, as director Rian Johnson’s acclaimed sequel “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans” and the Harry Styles-led romantic drama “My Policeman” debuted to blockbuster-starved audiences in Canada. Hollywood seemed eager to make up for lost time. So, as the curtain comes down on TIFF, here’s a look back at the major trends and takeaways from the 10-day festival.

‘Causeway’ Review: Jennifer Lawrence, as a U.S. Army Soldier, Goes Back to Her Indie Roots in a Downbeat Tale of Trauma and Recovery

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Causeway,” starring Jennifer Lawrence as a U.S. Army soldier recovering from injuries that are physical, mental, and spiritual, is the furthest thing from a genre film. Yet it belongs to what I’ve come to think of as a genre: the slow-burn non-verbal indie gloomfest. In saying that, I don’t mean to make light of the subject. Lawrence plays Lynsey, a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who returns from Afghanistan after riding in a vehicle that was struck by a bomb, which caused her to have a cerebral hemorrhage. At the start, she’s seated in a wheelchair, waiting for the home health-care worker (Jayne Houdyshell) who’s going to look after her as she undergoes rehab. Tentatively, Lynsey starts to walk, but for a while she struggles to bathe, drive, remember things. The brain injury has smashed and weakened her; she’s a person in fragments.

Jennifer Lawrence Wore a Sheer Corset-Inspired Gown to Her Latest Film Premiere

attended the premiere of her upcoming film Causeway at the Toronto International Film Festival wearing a stunning off-the-shoulder Dior Haute Couture dress with a corset-inspired bodice. Lawrence wore the sheer, long-sleeved gown over a pair of high-waisted black briefs and topped off the look with a pair of emerald and diamond Kwiat earrings and strappy black sandals. Similar to her from recent months, Lawrence wore her beachy blonde hair down and swept to the side and kept her makeup look fresh with glowy skin and a classic nude lip. US actress Jennifer Lawrence arrives for the premiere of Causeway during the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, on September 10, 2022. Causeway is a psychological drama starring Jennifer Lawrence as a US soldier recovering from a traumatic brain injury while deployed in Afghanistan. This marks Lawrence's first film premiere in 2022, as well as her first major public appearance since welcoming her first child with husband earlier this year.In a new published in September, the Causeway star revealed that her son's name is Cy and about meeting her baby boy.

Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney had a parents’ night out at the Toronto International Film Festival. On Saturday, ET caught up with the actress during the premiere of her upcoming film, where she dished about motherhood. “Wonderful, thank you,” she told ET’s Rachel Smith about her motherhood journey.  Although she walked the carpet sans Maroney, he was still there to support her for her first film since welcoming their son. When asked if the outing counted for date night, the 32-year-old quipped, «In the sense that we’ll both be in bed by nine.” The actress instead walked the carpet with her co-stars, Linda Emond, Brian Tyree Henry, Lila Neugebauer and Justine Ciarrocchi.Lawrence and Maroney, 38, tied the knot during a star-studded ceremony in 2019.

Back-To-Back Premieres Of ‘Glass Onion’ & ‘The Fabelmans’ Evoke Best Pre-Covid Memories In Glorious TIFF Night

My favorite Toronto premiere memory was the one where eventual Best Picture winner Spotlight played to a raucous crowd reaction at the Princess of Wales Theatre, the emotion ratcheted up even further when the Boston Globe journalists who cracked the Catholic Church pedophile scandals took the stage and stood next to the actors who played them onscreen. It has been several years since TIFF has been able to show why this is such a special festival, because of the Covid epidemic and Canada’s protective lockdown of its borders. Last night marked a turning point for TIFF as a preeminent showcase for awards season movies, with the back to back Princess of Wales Theatre world premieres of Netflix’s Rian Johnson-directed Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, followed by the premiere of Amblin/Universal’s Steven Spielberg love letter to his family and a movie camera, The Fabelmans. Both of these films land squarely in the awards conversation.

Jennifer Lawrence Breaks Down This Season of ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,’ Including ‘Evil’ Erika Jayne

Wilson Chapman editor In addition to her mega-successful career as an Oscar-winning actor and producer, Jennifer Lawrence is also famous as a “Housewives” franchise superfan. The actor has proclaimed her love for the Bravo series several times and has appeared on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.” While at the Toronto International Film Festival for her film “Causeway,” Lawrence chatted with Variety about her take on “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'” latest season, and particularly the housewife Erika Jayne. Jayne has been at the center of several controversies involving her husband, Tom Girardi, allegedly embezzling millions of dollars from victims of horrific accidents. And more recently Jayne was caught in an epic face off with current housewives Crystal Kung Minkoff and Garcelle Beauvais when it was suggested that she could pay off the alleged victims with a pair of $1.3 million earrings.

‘Causeway’ Review: Jennifer Lawrence Has A Superb Second Coming In A Tender, But Downbeat Character Piece [TIFF]

There’s water, water everywhere in “Causeway,” the strong cinematic debut of accomplished theatre mainstay Lila Neugebauer — and oh so much to think about. The laconic Lynsey (a resurgent Jennifer Lawrence in what is plainly her career’s finest performance) explains that she’s drawn to water on a deep, source-of-all-life level while convincing a pool cleaning service’s manager to give her a job skimming scum and fixing filters.

Jennifer Lawrence Reveals That Leaving Home At 14 Inspired Her Powerful Performance in ‘Causeway’

William Earl Jennifer Lawrence brought serious starpower to the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, appearing at the world premiere of her new film “Causeway.” But despite the big, Hollywood name “Causeway” was a quieter character study. Lawrence stars in and produces the film, in which she plays a soldier returning to civilian life in New Orleans. The film also stars Brian Tyree Henry, Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Russell Harvard. “Causeway” is the feature directorial debut of theater veteran Lila Neugebauer, with a script written by Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel and Ottessa Moshfegh.

‘Causeway’ Toronto Review: Jennifer Lawrence And Brian Tyree Henry In Tender Drama Of The Effects Of Trauma

Taking tentative steps back into living, but actually longing to get well enough to take up another tour, she gets a job as a pool cleaner much to her mother’s dismay. It is something simplistic enough that she can handle it, or at least believes so, but when her truck gives out on her she takes it to a auto repair where she meets a mechanic named James (Brian Tyree Henry), with whom she somehow forges an unlikely friendship, one that both take to awkward levels after being casual new friends, both in their own tentative ways exploring the possibilities beyond. Their connection as it turns out is the shared physical and psychological recovery process from a life-changing accident, in James’ case involving a car and the death of his nephew, and the loss of a leg. In a poignant and beautifully underplayed scene the details of his own trauma come to light as they sit by a pool she is taking care of. The fragile connection of two very fragile people, aching for some human interaction but almost incapable of letting go of themselve is heartbreaking. Both are caught in the crossroads of needing to love again, or even for the first time, but unconvinced it is something they deserve or even desire at this point in their lives.
