Angelique Jackson Antonio Fargas (“Starsky and Hutch”) and Stephanie Sigman (“Miss Bala”) have joined star Mike Colter in Tubi’s ‘Murder City,’ the second movie filmed under Village Roadshow Pictures’ Black Noir Cinema franchise, co-founded by NBA great Kevin Garnett. Last December, Variety exclusively announced “Murder City” as one of the first films slated for Black Noir Cinema, a lineup of genre movies developed and produced by Village Roadshow and Tubi, which will exclusively debut on the Fox-owned free streaming platform. Described as a “thrilling contemporary crime story,” the film follows Neil (Colter), a disgraced former cop, who after losing his job on the police force is forced to work with the city’s most notorious — and ruthless — kingpin, Ash (Sigman), to settle the debts of his estranged, deadbeat father, Graham (Fargas), and protect his wife and son.
Rounding out the film’s cast are Medina Senghore, Rhys Coiro, James Udom, Steven Prescod, Cedric Joe, Isaiah C. Morgan, Keyon Bowman, Ka’ramuu Kush with Jesse Garcia and UFC legend Anderson Silva. “Murder City” is directed by Michael D. Olmos (“Windows on the World”), written by Will Simmons (“Who’s There?”) and produced by Hicham Benkirane (“Interstate”), Garnett, Brian Bennett, and Mike Marangu via Content Cartel Studios, along with iconic director-producer Oz Scott (“Bustin’ Loose,” “S.W.A.T.” and The CW’s “Black Lightning”), who heads the Black Noir Cinema initiative. Inspired by classics like “Shaft,” “Super Fly” and “Cleopatra Jones,” Black Noir Cinema, aims to adapt and redefine the Blaxploitation genre and translate its spirit of empowerment to a new generation of Black audiences. First, bathing him in a tub and, second, lying motionless -- appearing reluctant and disengaged — beneath him in bed while he has sex with her.Carey, who was 17 at the time she read the script and 18 at the time of filming, says in an interview with that she was initially «scared» of performing the scenes with the then-47-year-old Considine.«We have an intimacy coordinator who was amazing,» Carey told the outlet«Again, still being 17, the first scene that I read from the show was my sex scene and my intimacy scenes, that includes the scene where I'm bathing the king — anything that felt intimate was considered an intimacy scene, which I thought was great.»An «intimacy coordinator» is someone whose job is to choreograph simulated sex scenes on film and television sets while being mindful of the wellbeing of the actors involved. «But, it scared me, because at that point I still hadn't met Paddy, I didn't know how much of a joy he was and how easy he was going to make [the scene], and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man and me, I was a bit concerned,» she continued.

Initially set to launch exclusively on Paramount+ on Friday, Sept. 23, the studio announced Monday that the film will now also be released in limited theaters across the top 50 market. The movie marks the feature directorial debut from Lathan, who pulls double duty on the project, co-starring in the film as Jayda “Jay” Jackson, mother to the story’s central character Bri (newcomer Jamila C. Christopher Vourlias The journey to the Lido has been longer than most for Ukrainian director Antonio Lukich, whose sophomore feature, “Luxembourg, Luxembourg,” has its world premiere Sep. 7 in the Horizons strand at the Venice Film Festival. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, Lukich’s life has been upended. Forced to flee Kyiv at the start of the war, the director spoke to Variety from Sweden, where he’s among four Ukrainian filmmakers who were granted a residency with the support of the Göteborg Film Fund. It is, he acknowledges, a world removed from the one he left behind. “It’s a great opportunity to develop Ukrainian stories when you cannot develop them right now in Ukraine,” he said.

I was surprised how quickly it got so much attention, but I wasn’t surprised,” Avant tells Variety about learning that the film racked up more than 9.3 million hours viewed in those first few days.
