Anne Heche Dead at 53 After Tragic Car Crash, Though 'Heart Is Still Beating'

Anne Heche has tragically passed away at the age of 53 after a car crash last week left her in a coma.
The actress had been hospitalized since last Friday after the car she was driving crashed into a home in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles. The car caught on fire and the firefighters fought the flames for 65 minutes until she could be pulled from the wreckage.
After the accident, Anne‘s rep released a statement explaining she was in “extreme critical condition” and had been in a coma since the accident. On Thursday night, the rep revealed that she was not expected to survive and that she would eventually be taken off life support.

“She was declared brain dead last night but has been kept on life support for organ donation. Her heart is still beating,” a rep said at 11am local time on Friday (August 12).
TMZ reports that “brain dead” is the definition of death under California law. While her brain has no function anymore, her heart is still beating to preserve organs for donations.
“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” a rep for the actress told People. “Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”
