(G)I-DLE leader and producer Soyeon has opened up about her approach to the group’s newly-released studio album ‘I Never Die’.At a press showcase for the girl group’s new album and single ‘Tomboy’ yesterday (March 14), the (G)I-DLE leader shared the thought process on the new record, which came over a year since the quintet’s last release.“Because we are coming back after such a long absence, I made this album as if we were debuting again,” said Soyeon, who wrote and co-composed over half the tracks on ‘I Never Die’, including its lead single.“When I saw the five members, who have matured, I wondered what concept would best suit them, and focused on that throughout the process,” added the leader, who said that she had worked on the release with the goal of producing a “detailed and cool” album.Elsewhere during the showcase, the vocalists of (G)I-DLE spoke about rapping on the B-side track ‘My Bag’, for which they had dropped a special video prior to the album’s release. “This is the first song where [the whole group] raps,” said Taiwanese member Shuhua, who added that she had enjoyed the challenge.Meanwhile, Chinese member Yuqi, who also co-wrote and composed the songs ‘Liar’ and ‘Polaroid’ joked that she had “always [been] good at rapping”.

(G)I-DLE leader Soyeon has responded to the controversy surrounding ‘Sun’, a track she produced for the finale of My Teenage Girl.On February 27, MBC aired the finale of K-pop idol audition show My Teenage Girl, which saw its final contestants performing a number of original songs. The (G)I-DLE member, who was also a mentor on the show, had gifted the contestants a track titled ‘Sun’, which she composed and wrote alongside producer Poptime.After the episode aired, some viewers took to social media to call out alleged similarities between parts of ‘Sun’ and the single ‘Wave’ by the boyband ATEEZ, which was released in 2019.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ recent call to pull drill music from the internet.Earlier this month, Adams said during a press conference that after seeing “alarming” drill music videos, he felt they should no longer be shared on social media.“We pulled Trump off Twitter because of what he was spewing,” the former NYPD officer said at the time. “Yet we are allowing music, displaying of guns, violence, we’re allowing it to stay on these sites.”Adams added: “We are going to pull together the social media companies, and state that you have a civic and corporate responsibility.”The Mayor also said he was “alarmed by the use of social media” by drill rappers before blaming the music for “contributing to the violence we are seeing all over this country.”According to NBC New York, shootings year to date are reportedly up 37 per cent in the city versus this same period in 2021 – an average of nearly four people shot every day.However, drill artists and rap culture experts have spoken to NME about how they don’t agree with Adams – and believe there’s an agenda behind his call to ban the genre.“Drill music is our form of art,” Jeffrey Mark Alexander, who performs as 22Gz told NME.
