‘Andor’: Andy Serkis Discusses His New ‘Star Wars’ Character, ‘Venom 3,’ ‘The Batman,’ & More [The Rogue Ones Podcast]

When you look at the current era of Disney-owned Lucasfilm, it’s difficult to argue that the high point has to be “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The prequel film, still now, feels wholly unique from just about everything else Lucasfilm has released over the last decade. And the one-shot film has already spawned a spinoff, “Andor,” which is regarded as the best “Star Wars” TV show yet.

It would be fun to be a fly on the wall at Lucasfilm as they discuss the performance of “Andor” Season 1. Without a doubt, the “Star Wars” series is the most critically acclaimed show Lucasfilm has released on Disney+.

“Andor” season one has come to a wrap with episode 12, “Rix Road,” an incredibly moving, incredibly rousing, symphonic crescendo where Maarva Andor (Fiona Shaw) makes a defining call to action to Ferrix and to the galaxy: to stop sleeping, to wake up, and to fight. Arguably the best episode of the series, it’s up there with the best episodes of TV we saw all year, full stop.

In today’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast hosts Mike DeAngelo, and Rodrigo Perez set their sights on the new mob dramedy from Paramount+, “Tulsa King.” The Sylvester Stallone-led show centers on Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York Mafia capo who just completed a 25-year prison sentence and is exiled by his bosses to start his own territory in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The series also stars Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Jay Will, Garrett Hedlund, and Domenick Lombardozzi.

It’s fair to say that Lucasfilm’s latest “Star Wars” series, “Andor,” is the most acclaimed show since the franchise debuted on Disney+ a few years ago. That said, “Andor” is a very different beast than its predecessors.

Disney+’s Andor is getting a cross-company push. The first two episodes of the Star Wars prequel series will air across Disney’s distribution platforms including ABC, FX, Freeform and Hulu over the Thanksgiving holiday, coinciding with the Season 1 finale on the streamer.

Lucasfilm giveth and Lucasfilm taketh away. On a day when it was reported that Shawn Levy is the latest filmmaker to get hired to develop a new “Star Wars” film, it has now been revealed that J.D.

Remember recently, when we talked about how the “Star Wars” film franchise (putting aside the TV world, for now) is in a bit of a confusing flux? There’s a release date scheduled in 2025, but what film would occupy that space? Could it be the upcoming project from Taika Waititi? Maybe the just-announced film from writer Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Disney+ confirmed its cast for the upcoming new Lucasfilm Star Wars series, The Acolyte. The Hate U Give actress Amandla Stenberg was already announced for the show, and Deadline told you first about Squid Game Emmy Award-winner Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto and Queen & Slim‘s Jodie Turner-Smith.

While we await the end of “Andor” and the continuation of “The Mandalorian” saga, the folks over at Lucasfilm have another new series on the horizon, which aims to be the “Star Wars” series most disconnected from the Skywalker Saga, titled “The Acolyte.” And with production now underway, Lucasfilm is willing to share some details about the new series.

Andor, the Star Wars prequel starring Diego Luna, has already set the start of filming for its second season and creator Tony Gilroy has revealed the date.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino nearly directed a “Star Trek” movie. But don’t expect him to sign up for the MCU anytime soon.

Three episodes remain in the first season of “Andor,” airing on Disney+ now. But production for Season Two of the “Star Wars” show starts filming soon, so showrunner Tony Gilroy needs to put the finishing touches on his cast and crew list.

Andy Serkis has had a busy 2022 this year with supporting roles as Alfred in Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman” and inmate Kino Loy in “Andor,” airing on Disney+ now. But thanks to those gigs, Serkis had to leave behind some other projects he was involved in, like the “Venom” franchise, which he directed the second installment of last year.
