Anas Sarwar has demanded that Liz Truss introduce an immediate freeze on energy prices and then call a general election. Speaking ahead of the announcement of Tory leadership contest between Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, Sarwar urged the new Prime Minister to take immediate action on rising fuel bills.
Truss, who is favourite to win, refused again on Sunday to spell out plans to help with the energy crisis, saying there would be announcement within a week of her becoming Prime Minister. Sarwar said that regardless of who wins the contest the new premier will be “Boris Johnson with neater hair, but without the jokes”.
Sarwar said: “Today just 160,000 Tory members will inflict a new Prime Minister on our country. Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak? It doesn’t matter. It’s just more of the same. The same lies, deceit and failures. Meanwhile, families worry about how they will afford spiralling bills and sky-high energy costs.
He added: “The cost-of-living crisis is the number one issue facing families today and the Tories have no answers. We won’t see the scale of change we need as long as this failing, out-of-touch Tory government is in office. The first thing the Prime Minister needs to do is freeze energy prices. The second thing they need to do is call a general election.”
Labour currently has a healthy lead over the Tories in the polls but with the next general election not due until late 2024 Truss is expected to get a bounce in support when she enters Number 10 and announces emergency help for bills. SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said “Scotland loses” out in the Conservative “race to the right” on show in the leadership campaign.
Blackford said: “While people are in fear at the prospect of opening their bills as prices rocket,
