Adding olive oil to your diet could lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer, new research suggests.
Olive oil, which is packed with healthy fats, nutrients and antioxidants, has been linked to a healthier lifestyle for years and is a staple of the Mediterranean diet.
But new research, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that it has broader health benefits against a large number of death risks.
Using a teaspoon of olive oil daily had a 19 per cent lower risk of all causes of death and a 19 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who rarely used it.
People who consumed olive oil daily also reduced their risk of death from neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease by 29 per cent.
The researchers also found olive oil use was associated with a 17 per cent lower death risk from cancer and an 18 per cent lower risk of death from respiratory disease.
The study, led by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, looked at the health and diet of 60,582 women and 31,801 men in the US over 28 years from from 1990 to 2018.
Marta Guasch-Ferré, senior research scientist in Harvard Chan School's Department of Nutrition explained that the research was in line with previous research and public health recommendations.
She said: "Olive oil consumption has been linked to lower cardiovascular disease risk, but its association with premature death was unclear.
"Our findings confirm current dietary recommendations to replace animal fats with plant oils for the prevention of chronic diseases and premature death."
