Psychological Thriller ‘The Left-Handed Son,’ From ‘The Plague’ Scribe, Debuts Trailer Ahead of Canneseries (EXCLUSIVE)

Canneseries world premiere, Movistar+ has shared in exclusivity with Variety the international trailer to “The Left Handed Son” (“El hijo zurdo”), the directorial debut of Rafael Cobos, writer of Alberto Rodríguez international hit “Marshland” banner TV series “The Plague.”  Cobos also wrote Rodriguez’s memorable episode in “Offworld,” a market screening at this year’s MipTV. Movistar+, which produces with José Antonio Félez’s Atipica Films, its partner on “The Plague” and “Prison 1977,” has also announced the release date for “The Left-Handed Son,” whose episodes will all be made available on Movistar+, Spain’s biggest SVOD/pay TV platform, on April 27.

Following a satisfying start to season 2, which not only brought back Jackie (Ella Purnell) but also saw Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) eating her late best friend's ear, the second episode took things even further as the series made good on a promise first teased in the season 1 premiere. In the present, Tai (Tawny Cypress) navigates her uneasy relationship with her estranged wife, Simone (Rukiya Bernard), Nat (Juliette Lewis) finds herself trying to understand what's going on with Lottie's (Simone Kessell) cult, and Misty (Christina Ricci) starts getting messages from fellow citizen detective Walter (Elijah Wood). But it's in the past where things are getting really desperate as Van (Liv Hewson) struggles help Tai (Jasmin Savoy Brown) with her sleepwalking, Nat (Sophie Thatcher) and Travis (Kevin Alves) are unable to hunt down any animals or find any real signs of Javi (Luciano Leroux) and the group learns about Shauna's «chats» with Jackie's dead body. Not only that, but the change in seasons continues to increase the challenges faced by the young survivors stranded in the wilderness. «Winter is the biggest threat and the biggest bully, definitely to Taissa,» Brown tells ET.

Yang and Amazon are back in the funny business: The “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Love Hard” and “Silicon Valley” star has lined up his second standup comedy special with streamer Prime Video, titled “Guess How Much?” Set to launch May 2, the event is a followup to Yang’s first Amazon comedy special, “Good Deal,” which launched in August 2020. In his new standup engagement, Yang will poke fun at “love languages, loser friends, and negotiating with his Asian parents,” per Prime Video. Directed by Inés París (“A mi madre le gustan las mujeres,” “La noche que mi madre mató a mi padre”) and written by Fermín P. Pina, “The Forgotten Killings” is produced by José Luis Rancaño at Madrid-based La Dalia Films.   Inés París’ “La noche que mi madre mató a mi padre,” also produced by Rancaño at La Dalia and starring Spain’s Belén Rueda and Argentina’s Diego Peretti, snagged the audience prize at the 2016 Málaga Film Festival.

Marcus Lim Chinese TV producer Linmon Media struck a decidedly international tone during the presentation of its 2023-24 slate at FilMart, with presenters speaking about their Chinese-language projects in only English and Korean, and handing out sleek project literature in multiple languages. Apart from a slate of romance, medical and crime dramas targeted at domestic audiences, the studio is actively remaking its hit female-led contemporary drama “Nothing but Thirty” in Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong, having previously licensed the remake rights to Korean pay TV network JTBC. The drama, which follows the lives of three women as they transition from their 20s into their 30s, is emblematic of the Linmon slate, which is heavy on female-centric contemporary romance dramas.
