Emanuel Okusanya Nigerian-British singer Tiwa Savage is a relatively new presence to most American music fans, but she’s been honing her craft for many years. After moving from Nigeria to London as a child, she began singing backup for George Michael and Mary J.
Blige as a teenager. She participated in the British edition of “The X Factor” and graduated from Berklee College of Music, and then moved back to Nigeria and in short order, became a major star, with her debut, “Once Upon a Time,” being nominated for Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigerian Entertainment Awards.
In 2019 she signed with Universal in 2019 and was featured on Beyonce’s “Lion King” soundtrack, and followed with her “Celia” album the next year. Within minutes of taking the stage at Brooklyn’s sold-out Warsaw to kick off her North American tour on Saturday night, it was clear that Savage has been hard at work over the past couple of years.
She made her smooth entrance onstage, clad in a silk Fendi suit with a black fitted cap, and kicked off the set with “Save My Life,” the opening track on “Celia” and a fan favorite. Joined by a live band, jazz and R&B elements were sprinkled into the live renditions of each song.
She’s a highly athletic performer as well, strutting across the stage and even into the crowd at one point, all while maintaining solid breath control and staying in key. She even shifted one of her signature hits, the midtempo ballad “Dangerous Love,” into a lower register.Savage engaged the crowd throughout the show, singling out one female fan by saying, “What is your name?… Your name is Princess…? No, you must be the Queen! You’re too beautiful to just be a princess!” While Savage probably could have played a bigger venue, Warsaw enabled

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music CriticWhen Jack White has performed in Los Angeles on past post-White Stripes tours, he’s often chosen venues that seem to fit his grand but down-and-dirty rock aesthetic: historic, stately and maybe dimly grungy places like the Shrine and Mayan. Take a look at the itinerary for his in-progress “Supply Chain Issues Tour,” though, and you’ll find that he’s favoring newer, shinier places.
Mark Sutherland “To be or not to be, that is no longer the question,” declared ABBA co-founder and musical mastermind Benny Andersson at the start of “ABBA Voyage,” the Swedish quartet’s first “concert” in over 40 years. And if that sounds like a curiously existential way to begin a pop concert, well, this is no ordinary live show. For a start, despite Andersson’s insistence that “This is really me, I just look very good for my age,” it’s actually his de-aged, computer-generated avatar — or “ABBA-tar,” if you must — that is speaking his pre-recorded words.

Emanuel Okusanya Since 2017, Haitian DJ-producer Michael Brun has been hosting Bayo concerts to highlight artist from his home country and the Caribbean, and at the tour’s stop at New York’s Pier 17 on Saturday night, he brought some famous friends: J Balvin — with whom he wrote the 2018 World Cup theme song “Positivo” — Wyclef Jean and even the long-running Haitian group Boukman Eksperyans. The 2022 installment of Bayo — which means, “to give” in Creole and concluded with the New York show — certainly took audiences on a sonic journey to Brun’s home country. The concert took place just a few days after Haitian Flag Day, which is a symbol of liberation and freedom throughout the Caribbean, and Brun crafted a setlist of both well-known American hits and Caribbean classics for the New York audience: For example, the crowd roared when he played Bajan heroine Rihanna’s song “Work,” and grew even more ecstatic as the instrumental backing was swapped for a classic Kompa riddim.
Jeff Miller When the iconic indie-rock forebear Pavement last reunited, for a massive tour in 2010, it was a tale of two bands, depending on when you saw them. At the beginning of the run, the lineup was tighter and mightier than ever, playing Coachella with the grit of a band determined to solidify its legacy while collecting paychecks and playing venues exponentially bigger than those it hit during its initial run.

Lina Lecaro A sprawling all-day Springtime event celebrating the darker edge of ’80s music held under a brutal Southern California sun? It might sound antithetical, but the Cruel World Festival, which took over Pasadena’s Brookside golf course at the Rose Bowl this weekend, was in fact, a fitting, full-circle moment for music, celebrating and validating an often misunderstood — and even mocked — subculture. It was also a reminder that the U.S., and specifically Los Angeles, has long served as a welcoming home for gloomy post-punk — maybe even more so than the U.K.Saturday and Sunday’s festivities highlighted the legacy of Gen-X’s dark side with a dynamic and defiant bill full of enigmatic weirdos and erstwhile rock heroes, most in their sixties or older.
William Earl One of the few bright spots of the early days of the pandemic was genre chameleon Rina Sawayama dropping her debut album “Sawayama.” As weeks became months while trapped inside, the genre-hopping LP gave listeners an audio passport, effortlessly jumping from Gaga-style pop to the late ’90s guitar chug of Korn on singles like “STFU!” and “XS.” While the rest of the album dips into more traditional pop music exercises, those two songs almost dare listeners: Can you keep up with this winning mashup of turn-of-the-century indulgence?Cut to 2022 and her “Dynasty” tour, which wrapped up with a sold-out Friday show at New York’s Terminal 5 and feels like a victory lap from an artist whose fame hit while no one left the house. Her profile has grown since the first record — collaborating with the likes of Lady Gaga and Charli XCX, booking a role in the new “John Wick” movie, walking in runway shows and even recording a cover of “Enter Sandman” for a Metallica tribute album — but her live set was tightly constructed to show her absolute control and ascension into pop stardom.
Lily Moayeri No one told the almost 2,000-strong audience at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles that Supergrass were never as big in North America as they were in their native U.K. After an almost decade-long break-up and reformation in 2019, the excitement for the band’s singular-sounding exuberant pop/rock, which never really went away, is reignited.
