Adoption Counts is a regional adoption agency that combines five local authorities from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire together to deliver adoption services, honing their collective professional expertise and specialist skills. They work with families across Cheshire East, Manchester, Salford, Stockport, and Trafford to forge better matches between parents and children, to create relationships that last.
The organisation has recently reached a milestone; five years of helping adopters and children find one another across the North-West, and to mark the occasion Head of Service Gail Sprey sat down with the MEN to reflect on the journey, and to discuss why it’s crucial to have open and honest conversations about adoption. Government statistics show that in England as of 31 March 2020, there were 80,080 children in care, but in that same period only 3,440 children were adopted, demonstrating why awareness is still an important topic.
Gail succinctly summarised Adoption Counts’ overarching mission as “finding forever families for children from those five local authorities where there’s a plan for adoption, we assess prospective adopters for those children and we provide adoption support for those families.”
She started her own journey as a social worker, a role which she undertook for over 25 years, supporting families through challenging times in order to keep their children safe. Her first experience of adoption was when she was a student social worker, when adoption wasn’t as well-known, or as well supported.
“I became aware of adoption then because there were a few challenges around children who had been adopted as they became older,” Gail said.
