Adele reacts to winning an Emmy: “Trust me to officially have an EGO”

The days of pre-award festivities leading up to the Sept. 12 ceremony were frantic, starting with Variety’s Showrunners Dinner (where she swapped war stories with fellow TV creators like Dan Harmon, Danny Strong and Liz Meriwether). Then came the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, the Governors Gala and Disney’s post-Emmy celebration, which spilled into the next day. Something had to give. Yet when the “Abbott Elementary” creator and star sits down for an in-depth interview with Variety, her creative voice is clear and strong.

When you’re nominated for 25 different awards in the 74th Emmy Awards, odds are you are going to go home with a little bit of hardware. But when you’re a show like “Succession,” the question isn’t whether you’ll win, it’s how much you’ll take home at the end of the evening.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Jean Smart took home the Emmy for best actress in a comedy series for her performance in “Hacks.” Smart won in a stacked category over fellow nominees Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”) and Issa Rae (“Insecure”). Smart won for “Hacks” Season 2, which aired on HBO Max beginning in May 2022. The show was renewed for a third season in June shortly after the second season debuted. This is Smart’s second consecutive win in the category after her victory for “Hacks” Season 1 last year. She has been nominated for 12 Emmy Awards throughout her career with five wins, counting this and last year’s win. She previously won twice for best guest actress in a comedy for “Frasier” and for best supporting actress in a comedy for “Samantha Who?”

Amy Poehler has arrived! The 50-year-old comedian, director and writer made her grand entrance at the 74th Annual Emmy Awards on Monday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Poehler stepped out on the red carpet in an elegant sequined blue gown with a halter top and gold bracelets for each wrist. Though the beloved comedian certainly looked incredible, by the time the Emmys live broadcast aired, Poehler had already lost out in all of her nominated categories. For years he has been the musical mastermind behind live shows for Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5 and Eminem. This weekend, he picked up an Emmy Award for outstanding music direction for his work on “The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent.” And just last week, he kicked off a residency, “The Legacy Experience,” at new Los Angeles music venue the Sun Rose. Blackstone never really saw himself as a frontman until COVID made him stop and think about his legacy. “People trust me to curate,” he says. “I saw a couple of my friends pass away during COVID, and I had heard someone say, ‘I don’t want to die with a laptop full of ideas.’”

Carson Burton “Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers” won outstanding television movie at the creative arts Emmy’s this Sunday. The film is a surprise win at this year’s Emmys, marking the first time that an animated movie has won the category, which tends to be somewhat confusing. This year, nominees included a variety of TV show reunions billed as one-time “movies,” from “Ray Donovan: The Movie,” “Reno 911! The Hunt for QAnon” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas.” HBO’s “The Survivor,” which was originally theatrical-minded and premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, was also nominated for the category. “Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers,” which stars Andy Samberg and John Mulaney as the classic chipmunks from the animated series of the same name, premiered on Disney+ on May 16, 2022. Directed by Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island, the film is a live-action/animation hybrid that follows Chip and Dale as middle-aged chipmunk actors. Chip is an insurance salesman, and Dale spends his time at fan conventions. Washed up has-beens living in L.A., Chip and Dale must now get the team back together to find a missing friend.

The legacy of Chadwick Boseman continues to expand far past his time on this earth, as the "Black Panther" actor just won an Emmy Award posthumously. Accepting the Creative Arts Emmy Award on his behalf was Taylor Simone Ledward, who the actor wed prior to succumbing to his battle with colon cancer in 2020.
