At Manchester Cathedral, the St George's flag was lowered, while advertising boards throughout the city centre were replaced with photographs of Her Majesty, with the caption '1926-2022'.
It was only through these boards that some discovered the 96-year-old Monarch had passed away. Rita Corser dropped her shopping bag on the pavement near Piccadilly Gardens bus station and started to sob after spotting people taking photographs of one of the boards.
“Oh my God, I was like ‘why are people taking pictures’,” a visibly shaken Rita said. “I didn't realise, I’ve been out all day, I’m so sorry. May God rest her Soul.

“She’s been there all the time. We grew up in Nigeria and she was our head of state and our parents were like ‘the Queen, the Queen, the Queen’. Then you move to England and it’s the same and now you’re saying she’s not here anymore. It’s just a shock.”
Claudio, 25, found out about the news through the same advertising board as Rita. He said: “It’s come as a big surprise. When the Prince [Philip] died we were shocked but she was the Queen for such a long time.
“We’ve just been in a coffee shop and we had some messages in the group chat, but we didn’t believe them. I think right now it hasn’t settled in that she’s dead. I think tomorrow will be the big moment.”
