Andrew Lloyd Webber’s troubled ‘Cinderella’ heads to Broadway with changes — and a new title

coming to Broadway after all — and, like the main character, she’s getting an extreme makeover.First they’re ditching the title that confused Brits because they associate the princess with Christmas pantomimes and would have stumped Americans because they’d expect Rodgers and Hammerstein or Disney. For its run at the Imperial Theatre beginning Feb. 17, 2023 (one day before Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” shoves the old chandelier in a storage unit), the show has been renamed “Bad Cinderella.” The only other time Lloyd Webber gave a different moniker to a show after a major West End run was when he changed “Jeeves” to “By Jeeves.” But a “By” ain’t a “Bad.” Tell us what you think of the title “Bad Cinderella” in the comments, readers! There will also be a brand-new star.

ABC News Readies Weekly Streaming Version of ‘Nightline’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor People who want to watch ABC News’ “Nightline” no longer have to stay up past 12:30 in the morning. The venerable late-night news show, perhaps the last weekday word in the daily broadcast news cycle, is taking a step into streaming video, with a weekly newsmagazine counterpart that aims to burnish new storytelling tactics for subscribers to Hulu. The first half-hour broadcast of “Impact x Nightline” debuts Thursday, Oct. 6. The new series, produced by the same ABC News team that makes daily “Nightline,” will home in on streaming viewers and the things that will keep them interested, says Eman Varoqua, the program’s executive producer. If you’re looking to see an ABC News anchor sitting behind a desk, you won’t see it here, she vows: “You’ll see them on the ground, in the field, really conducting the interviews, and taking you to the heart of the story,” she says. “It’s very much a ‘journey’ style of reporting, and they will be right there, taking the viewers through the story and all its complexities.”

Apple Music Replaces Pepsi as Sponsor of Super Bowl Halftime Show

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor Apple Music will take over as the sponsor of the NFL’s Super Bowl halftime show, replacing Pepsi as the key backer of the annual spectacle that typically draws one of the biggest single TV audiences of the year. “Music and sports hold a special place in our hearts, so we’re very excited Apple Music will be part of music and football’s biggest stage,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats, in a prepared statement. “We’re looking forward to even more epic performances next year and beyond with the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.” Apple has in recent months shown a greater interest in sports. Its streaming platform has struck deals with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer to show games to subscribers. Sports rights have long been the province of traditional media companies like Fox, Disney, Paramount Global and NBCUniversal, but technology companies like Apple and Amazon have made a bigger play for those rights as they seek to lure consumers to their new broadband subscription-video services. Amazon, for its part, is now a major NFL partner thanks to its control of rights to “Thursday Night Football.”

CNN’s Morning Plan Will Face A.M. Scramble

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor CNN’s new chief hopes primetime anchor Don Lemon can help the network gain ground in some of TV news’ toughest terrain. Chris Licht, who has vowed to tone down some of the more aggressive commentary at the network since taking its reins earlier this year, has enjoyed an eyebrow-raising streak in morning news. He launched the durable MSNBC franchise “Morning Joe” in 2007 and then helped CBS gain new momentum in the a.m. in 2012 by starting “CBS This Morning.” Neither program was the most-watched of its brethren, but Licht gained new viewership for the networks that backed him by providing more substantial conversation among anchors and ignoring some of the frillier elements of the time period, like cooking demonstrations or street interviews with passersby.

For global news outlets, this was also a moment many had spent decades preparing for. “I’ve literally been thinking about this for many, many years,” said ABC News’ senior executive producer for special events, Marc Burstein. Similarly Chris Shaw, editorial director at U.K. broadcaster ITN News, told Variety that over 35 years he has rehearsed the Queen’s death “several times each decade.”

Ulrich Seidl’s ‘Sparta’ Will Premiere at San Sebastian Despite Child Exploitation Allegations (EXCLUSIVE)

Manori Ravindran International Editor Ulrich Seidl’s “Sparta” has been pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival amid allegations of impropriety and child exploitation against the director, but its premiere at next week’s San Sebastian Film Festival will continue as planned, Variety can reveal. A spokesperson for the Spanish festival tells Variety on behalf of festival management that “Sparta” will remain in competition. Providing a three-point list explaining their reasoning, San Sebastian said “the festival team assesses the films after their viewing according to their interest and quality” and that the event “does not have the ability to judge how a film has been shot and whether a crime has been committed in the course of the filming. If anyone has any evidence of a crime, they should report it to a judge.”
