Michael Winterbottom’s COVID-19 Drama ‘This England,’ With Kenneth Branagh as Boris Johnson, Flatlines: TV Review

Naman Ramachandran The crisis of leadership Britain has been plunged into over recent years merits sustained study as a cautionary tale. But it demands deeper and sharper analysis than is available in “This England,” a curiously indifferent six-part miniseries notionally centred on former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the initial coronavirus outbreak, currently limping out on Sky’s U.K. arm. When Winterbottom’s Revolution Films announced the project (originally titled “This Sceptred Isle”) last year – with Kenneth Branagh unveiled as the project’s Johnson – speculation was rife. Would the series be an ensemble satire, along the lines of Winterbottom’s rambunctious “24 Hour Party People”? Or an artfully sober inquiry, in the vein of the director’s Amanda Knox-inspired “The Face of an Angel”? In fact, it’s neither: what we’ve got is a hurriedly assembled primetime procedural that undermines its claim to rigorous accuracy from the off by misspelling the name of Johnson’s soon-to-be-wife Carrie Symonds in its opening credits.

Sir Kenneth Branagh's three-hour transformation into Boris Johnson

Sir Kenneth Branagh's Boris Johnson transformation took three hours "a day". The 61-year-old star looks uncannily like the former British Prime Minister in Sky's political drama 'This Sceptred Isle'. However, it took a lot of work to get him to resemble him, with Branagh having to don a suit to bulk him up and a number of prosthetics.

Producer Jermaine Dupri Celebrates 30-Year Run of Hits by Revisiting Usher … and Ushering in Fresh Controversy With Dvsn’s ‘If I Get Caught Cheating’

Janee Bolden A few weeks shy of Jermaine Dupri’s 50th birthday, the super-producer is deep into conversation with Variety about his long history of hits and some of the latest notches on his belt… or about as deep as he can be, with Usher repeatedly calling him to discuss the upcoming album they’re in the last stages of finishing, before Dupri finally tells him they’ll have to catch up the next day. Ironically, Dupri can’t talk to Usher right now because he’s busy talking about Usher — in particular, how their 2004 album “Confessions” became a blockbuster and altered the R&B landscape, whether or not it’s always celebrated by the culture at large as a major game-changer. But there are contemporary accomplishments to discuss as well, like how Dupri is in the middle of a public uproar over his latest contribution to R&B, “If I Get Caught Cheating (That Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You),” from the Canadian duo Dvsn, comprised of singer Daniel Daley and producer Paul “Nineteen85” Jefferies. Immediately after the song was released, it ignited fiery debates about infidelity and toxicity on Twitter that have increased Dvsn’s profile tenfold practically overnight.
